About Air Conditioner History

Have you ever noticed the satisfaction when you enter your nice cool house after a long, hard day of work outside? When the sun blazes down and you feel like you’ll never feel a cool breeze again, all you have to do is walk inside the house and turn on the AC.

This genius invention is now used across the world, every single day. No matter where you find yourself, you’ll probably be able to set up an air conditioner unit for your home or your room. These days, you can even find portable air conditioner units that you can take with you and simply plug in to get your room to cool down.

This hasn’t always been the case, of course. There was a time when air conditioner systems didn’t exist. Back then, people were at the mercy of the heat and could only sit in the shade to cool off. It is important to learn where things come from, how things were created, and to remember that humans have it much better than most living creatures on planet earth.

Who Invented the AC?

ac inventorThe very first types of air conditioners amounted to little more than a bucket of ice placed in a window. When the breeze blew through the window, it would blow over the ice and cool a room.

This was, of course, inconvenient and time-consuming. On hot days, the ice would melt rapidly. It didn’t’ always work, either. In many places, the summer heat is stifling and a breeze is rare.

The inventor of the modern-day air conditioner that everyone all knows and loves was a man named Willis Carrier. After studying engineering and earning his degree in 1901, he turned around and revolutionized the world by designing the first modern air conditioning system in 1902. He discovered that by controlling the humidity in a room, he could also control the environment and the temperature. This discovery led to the first air conditioning system.

What Was Happening in the Time Period?

Willis Carrier discovered the ability to air condition a room and invented the first air conditioning system in 1902. It’s mindboggling to think that just forty years before, the Civil War was fought. Coming into the twentieth century, America was set up for a massive influx of change and advances.

In 1902 alone a technique for the mass production of windows was discovered and gold was discovered in Nevada and Alaska. Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso were artists of the era. And in the world of writing, Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle were enjoying their hey-day.

To say the least, it was an eventful year. While Carrier may not have known it at the time, his invention would completely revolutionize the way people lived, worked, played, and studied indoors. Today, every time you turn on the air conditioning and gratefully feel the cool air, it’s thanks to Willis Carrier and his invention in 1902.

Air Conditioner Development

ac developmentWhen Willis Carrier invented the humidity controller, he didn’t know that he would transform the way society lives life. The basis for how his first machine works is still the basis for how modern-day air conditioners work.

Carrier created a machine that forces air through a compressor where the air is pumped over coils chilled with a coolant. The cold air was then forced into a closed space, such as a room, using a fan.

As the air was forced out and recirculated, the room’s temperature dropped creating a cooled environment. The system was so successful that it is still used to this day.
